Syntropy draws on the collective behaviour of light within a laser, where billions of individual photons become aligned and act together as a single coherent beam. The installation explores a similar process of self-synchronisation, drawing parallels with natural phenomena such as fireflies, where seemingly independent individuals can gradually fall into a shared rhythm. Through interaction, the work reveals how coherence can emerge from many autonomous parts. The project is informed by ideas of quantum entanglement and interconnectedness. Rather than attempting to represent quantum physics literally, Syntropy translates these concepts into an embodied experience: a local action can influence the behaviour of the wider system, and individual movement becomes part of a larger collective response. Visitors are invited to experience how seemingly small interactions can propagate through a network, transforming individual behaviour into collective order. A constellation of light nodes begins in a state of apparent disorder, with each node pulsing according to its own rhythm. As visitors move through the space, motion sensors register changes in proximity and distance, allowing nearby nodes to respond to their presence. Gradually, these local interactions ripple outward, causing neighbouring lights to synchronise and scattered pulses to converge into a unified rhythm. In this way, Syntropy becomes a living system in which coherence is not imposed, but emerges through interaction. The visitor does not simply observe the transformation—they become an active participant in it, revealing the relationship between individuality, connection, and collective behaviour.
